Partiality

A word so hot back then, it made us question how we got treated.

‘You are being partial’, ‘the teacher is doing partiality’, ‘don’t be so partial’.. these lines linger on my mind. I was reading something online and the word just popped, and its kind of playing ‘land & water’ in my head. I think there is a relevant need for this word to be thought-of in todays time. Also, today we don’t learn about mimosa, but we learn from it to act its mechanics out in daily life. I remember the garden where ‘touch me not’ would be a fascinating plant, which would close itself up with the slightest of the human touch. I don’t know whether it is partial towards us or it acts the same way with a butterfly’s landing.

Back then in the early 90’s, around me where english was an aspired language   the word partiality was somehow so hot that even kids had a grasp over its ‘understanding’. It got manifested in the arenas of a kids life, manifested in a form of behavior, of the act of selection or inclusion, liking and disliking, of acceptance and rejection, and in the behavior of the act of verification. Partiality, if i remember it as a phenomena if i could say, was i suppose a topic of discussion in the main stream of the then, which was not a medium but a common-conscious. The attitudes of learning back then of what I remember where that of, ‘to learn and know everything and then be wise enough to know to keep what and what not’. Here i am not referring to the kids, i am talking about the adults. Learning i sensed was considered a form of building up tools and weapons in your minds fort. These adults when encountered the term partiality either as a new thing or simply as a ‘formed and worded title’ to a subject from their daily mind, they did not just understand it, they showed it off, they spoke of it in the rooms, in the outs, in the groups, in the get-to-gathers.

They had to be uptight of their believed moral compasses and had to argue and debate to present their creation of the meaning of the phenomena called partiality. Using the newer understanding as a self correcting mechanism would have been considered a silly futuristic behavior, but to make it yours, repackage, relabel, add new meaning and to use it was considered quite of the time. All these years later, when i look back, i look at these everyday cycles of tradition and culture which were about obedience and acceptance, which were about listening to agree, about seniority means correctness, about questioning means disrespect, when i look at these cycles i cannot not think of how partiality was repackaged and relabeled to make it kid friendly. To use partiality as a tool of seclusion packaged as correctness is and was lethal. I remember.
